A 50-Year History of MCCI

It’s certainly been an adventure; we’ve always treated everyone as we would want to be treated ourselves. And that’s why MCCI has been so successful. George Bartolo OAM

At the vanguard of Australia’s new policy of multiculturalism, 57 Illawarra community members came together in June 1975 to form a council of migrant leaders.

Their goals were to be a unified voice for communities, to encourage participation in civic affairs, and to develop services for newcomers and those that needed a helping hand.

Five decades later, the Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra has evolved into a widely respected regional peak body and non-profit service provider for migrants, refugees, and the established generations of multicultural communities.
This is their 50-year story of Voice, Participation, and Service.
